❗️Turkiye draft law seeks to support PKK disarmament & reintegration
Turkiye’s ruling coalition submitted a draft bill to parliament on Wednesday aimed at advancing a peace process with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), including legal protections for many former militants and the suspension of prison sentences for some people convicted of PKK membership.
The legislation, which is expected to be approved by parliament later this week, seeks to help end the decades-long conflict by enabling the return of potentially thousands of former PKK members currently based in northern Iraq.
Under the proposed law, Turkiye’s intelligence agency MIT would be responsible for verifying the group’s disarmament, while a committee made up of the vice president, several ministers, and the MIT chief would oversee the surrender process and the laying down of arms.
