Haley Stevens’ New Campaign Ad Features Anti-LGBTQ Pastor
With just days left before the Democratic primary election in the closely watched Michigan Senate race, Senate hopeful Rep. Haley Stevens released an eleventh-hour campaign advertisement featuring a pastor with a history of delivering anti-LGBTQ sermons and sharing Islamophobic posts on social media. Several scenes in the ad (x.com), paid for by Stevens’ campaign, show Bishop Christopher Martin of the Flint-based Cathedral of Faith Ministries Church of God in Christ. Martin has sparked controversy in the past for comments he made about the firing of a pastor who was allegedly gay, which were considered homophobic (flintbeat.com). “We cannot have perversion over the people,” said Martin in a video (youtube.com › watch) that surfaced (dailywire.com) in 2022, referring to homosexuality. “We are trying to love them out of what they’re in.”
