❗️Syria agrees to cut Russian oil imports amid talks with Washington
Damascus has agreed to significantly cut Russian oil imports as part of ongoing talks with Washington over the removal of the last major US sanctions designation against Syria, according to three sources to Reuters.
Analysts said the reduction could provide Washington with another tool to limit Moscow’s economic influence in Syria.
In recent months, senior Syrian officials informed US counterparts that they were prepared to scale back Russian oil imports while discussing the possibility of removing Syria from Washington’s decades-old list of state sponsors of terrorism, according to a Syrian source with direct knowledge of the talks, a US official, and another source briefed on the matter.
The three sources said the US did not directly present the reduction in Russian oil imports as a condition for lifting the designation.
